Mastering Your Own Emotions 1
Situations can be overwhelming sometimes; if it's not one thing, it's another! When one problem is solved, another immediately presents itself as the next obstacle.
Whether it's dealing with consequences, circumstances, or critique, the weight of it all can sometimes feel crushing. When the most rational thoughts I can grasp are either too violent or too self-destructive to carry out, when it takes every ounce of willpower to stop myself from trying to out-scream the voices in my head, and when my brain starts to feel like my skull has caved in on itself from the stress of it all, I find myself resorting to the following methods to ground myself before it's too late.
Before something happens that will potentially change my life for the worst.
Escapism: Music Soothes Even The Savage Beast
Whatever emotion is getting the better of you, getting out of yourself and the situation by plugging into music works best for me. Try to make sure you won't be interrupted. Doing this can be like a meditation or trance, and the best benefits come to those who aren't pulled away before they're through hearing what they need from the music,
Overcome with anger? Listen to death-metal and fantasize beating the snot out of whoever made you mad. Sounds a little counter-intuitive, like feeding the fire or premeditating murder; but actually works as a cathartic, releasing the emotion into an imaginary situation or outcome that actually pacifies it.
Depressed or feeling suicidal? Melancholy music will feed the grief within you to death by validating your feelings until, like any other storm, it passes into nonexistence. The point is trying to embrace the feelings instead of running away from them. You will cry your eyes out, but you will feel better afterwards. The musician has identified with what you're going through, and so have probably hundreds (of thousands?) of other people who are their fans.
Anxious or Overwhelmed? Try Dub-Step or House music; moving to the intense beat of the music can actually slow down your mind and allow the scattered energies of your thoughts to focus on one issue or problem at a time. When powerful anxiety energy is narrowed down and focused into one target, that target gets decimated quickly and efficiently. Just don't get in the way of someone doing this themselves, they'll floor you with their determination.
Bored to death? Meditative, slow-beat, thinking or creative music, like classical, will redirect any energy you have into the realm of inspiration and imagination. There you can express yourself without doing much harm if any. After all, art is subject to translation like beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
