Mood Swings with PCOS
PCOS is a chronic condition of hormone imbalance that is accompanied by the symptom of frequent and sudden mood swings. I have become too familiar with the feeling of being trapped in "emotional ambivalence" --from moving from being in tears from sheer excitement just from opening a bag of noodles, to complete exasperation from not getting proper WiFi signal in 0.002 seconds! The severity of mood swings vary from person to person and by situation, of course. Although everyone experiences mood swings at some points in time, it is much more intense with PCOS because of the hormonal fluctuations.
Doctors recommend birth control pills to regulate hormonal balance, but what if that doesn't control the mood swings? Below are ways that work for me (sometimes), and I hope it help others out too.
- Try to help someone else on a task to take your mind off yourself
- Listen to up-tempo music (I keep a playlist of songs specifically for mood swings)
- Drink Chamomile Tea (it may really just be a placebo effect but it works)
- Watch a comedy or talk to someone who will make you laugh
