Why you should practice mindfulness as a student.
If you aren't familiar with the term of "mindfulness", I advise you to read my other post about just that, because in this one, I'm going to write about how you can benefit from mindfulness techniques as a student - no matter if you're currently in high school or studying, mindfulness is something for everyone.
So, how much of an impact could it have on your life as a student, why should you try being more mindful?
- Helps with stress - Are you stressed with assignments, homework and tests? Do you feel like there is too much going on, and that you have to give your best at all times? Are you multi-tasking a lot, or are you perhaps a procrastinator? Mindfulness could help you with dealing with stress, if you allow yourself to take a little time off. The key to succeeding is to actually let yourself focus on only one thing at a time, or let yourself take a five minute break to meditate, listen to a song or do something else and just be present in the moment. Really, try it.
- Improves confidence - Many teens struggle with low self-esteem, and often, this goes hand in hand with stress. Many of these teens are perfectionists and their self-esteem can drop incredibly low if something goes wrong, say, if they do worse than expected on a test or fail to do something on time. The goal of mindfulness is to embrace yourself, flaws and all. You are worth that five minute break, you deserve it, and you'll feel a lot better about yourself if you allow yourself to take it.
- Helps deal with difficult emotions - Had a fight with your friend, broke up with a boyfriend or are things at home difficult? Being a teen is much like being on an emotional rollercoaster, and that's not always a bad thing, but when it gets bad, knowing how to deal with difficult emotions really helps a lot. Practicing mindfulness can help you quieten you mind, and help you think more rationally.
Try being more mindful, there really isn't much more to it than allowing yourself that little break in a hectic day. You can read more about mindfulness, and what impact it can have on a teenager's/student's life in my collection: "Mindfulness, and how it can make school less stressful".
