Stress vs Anxiety
Anxiety is a big word. Even if there is a great tendency for us to get attached to heavy words, sometimes anxiety isn't about any disorder but about a natural, intended reaction to something we are experiencing.
If we wouldn't feel anxious about some events in our life, we wouldn't be able to understand the dangers and be ready to act one way or the other. When we feel stressed, we usually have to make a decision about something. Not being worried or anxious can be a sign of desensitization (desensitization occurs after a person has been too much exposed to a certain event to which we usually have a negative response for).
Still, even the most experienced speakers can still feel anxiety before having a very important conference.
There is a tiny line between "stress", "fear" and "anxiety" as to how people generally approach these terms. What makes the real difference between stress & anxiety disorders are the following:
- Intensity & Length: any anxiety disorder produces intense and excessive emotional responses; unlike normal anxiety, disorders last from weeks to months.
Example. If you have an exam 6 months from now, and you are not suffering of an anxiety disorder, your stress and anxiety will increase as the event approaches. For a person who deals with a disorder, the intensity is the same all the time - usually extremely high.
- Avoidance: any anxiety disorder makes you unable to deal with other people sometimes and that will eventually affect your school performance, your work relations, your family etc. Anything that makes you feel anxious will become a stressor and usually you see stressors everywhere.
Example. This avoidance is a lot more by choice for those who deal with normal anxiety. You need to be alone in order to focus but you can deal with it if you can't really find a quiet place. For the person suffering of anxiety disorder, everything is always very hard to deal with.
To be able to make it easier, you can try directive therapies, such as CBT or some very specific, customized plans, that will help you understand how to have more control over your thoughts and events in your life.
